OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work on July 9, an agent that takes a goal, gathers information across connected apps and files, breaks the job into steps, and finishes it on its own, producing built sheets, slides, and documents rather than instructions for users to follow. The agent runs on GPT-5.6 and handles long tasks in the background across devices instead of single prompts.
For two years, the pitch for AI at work was a smarter chatbot that answered your question then waited for the next one, but that framing is now out of date. The agent targets tasks that eat an HR ops week—reconciling a headcount sheet against payroll, drafting fifteen offer letters from a template, pulling attendance data into a board update—exactly the multi-step, cross-app jobs agents are built for.
